Heartburn is a condition that millions of people will face throughout their lifetime. It is caused by the build up of acids within the stomach, usually caused by specific foods that will then be regurgitated up into the esophagus. This causes discomfort in the chest area, near the breast bone. The pain rises into the neck area and into the throat. It is uncomfortable in its least form and burning and painful in its worst cases. In any case, finding the treatment option that is right for you is essential to getting throughout your condition.
There are several options for the treatment of heartburn. First, though, you should know that it really is heartburn that you are trying to treat. Many of those that are experiencing what they think is heartburn are actually experiencing something that is similar and more potentially dangerous to them. For this reason, it should be something that you talk to your family doctor about. If you are a chronic heartburn victim, you should insure that you talk to your doctor about your condition as this can be a sign that something more serious is happening. Heartburn can cause damage to the esophagus and internal organs, especially when it happens regularly.
When you talk to your doctor about your heartburn, he may go right ahead and treat you for obvious symptoms of heartburn. But, if he thinks that it could be something else, he may suggest a few simple tests to insure this. He may also do these tests to determine if you have any damaged that has been caused by the heartburn. These are simple and straightforward tests. Once your doctor has determined that you do in fact have heartburn, he is likely to provide you with a diet to follow that will exclude foods that are potentially dangerous to you and will prescribe the right medication for your heartburn.
