You may be one of the many that experience heartburn day in and day out. You may know that if you do go to that favorite Mexican restaurant that you will be suffering for it when you come home. Yet, do you really need to take your heartburn serious? For many individuals, the symptoms of heartburn are all that is out there. There is not anything that makes it worse or makes it any better. But, this is not the case of everyone. Many of those that are suffering from heartburn right now are actually experiencing more than just a little discomfort.

Chronic heartburn is a real problem. It can actually cause a lot of damage to your body’s internal organs. If it happens quite a bit, you will likely be doing damage to your esophagus. Only your doctor can tell you the extent of the damage that you are doing. In some rare cases, though, the damage can be enough to cause cancerous cells to develop in this area. Others will suffer from painful inflammations that may also need their own treatment.

If you have not ever really had much heartburn but are feeling it now for the first time and you are over the age of 40, you should contact your doctor right away. Many people think that what they are feeling is heartburn, but it may be angina which is a condition in which the heart is not getting enough blood throughout the body. This can be a heart attack that is waiting to happen. In these cases, professional medical attention should be obtained right away.

For others, though, heartburn is something that affects them without much seriousness. If you get heartburn after you eat a specific food and do not do it that much, you may not have anything to worry about. But, if you are battling heartburn more than three times per week, you should seek out the help of a professional.

If you do your best to prevent your body from heartburn outbreaks, they may still happen. Remember, it is always more important to avoid the foods and stress that help to cause your heartburn then to treat it with medications or other treatments. Yet, even if you do this, you may experience heartburn spells. There are several medications on the market that can help you. Some of them will work for you while others will not. The goal is to find the mediation options that are right for your type of heartburn (based on its intensity) and then treat it with the right amount and type of product.

One of the most common types of medications for heartburn are those that are called antacids. These medications will provide you with some relief from heartburn. They work for about 25% of the people that take them. This may seem like a low number. These medications are ideal for use when you are experiencing lower levels of intensity in the heartburn. They are also a good choice for those that do not experience heartburn all of the time. These are usually purchased as over the counter medications and are made by many different distributors.

Heartburn is also able to be treated with other medications as well. For those that are looking for increased help or those that are experiencing no benefit from the over the counter heartburn products, seeking out the help of your doctor is the next best thing to do. Your doctor can prescribe for you medications that can actually turn off the acid producing pumps in your stomach enough to stop the heartburn from happening. This medication has seen increased benefit in many patients but it too is not 100% effective for all patients. These medication options may or may not be right for you. Your doctor can tell you more about your specific condition.
